Marie and Marc DeGraef - 737 Washington Drive, Pittsburgh 15229
This charming home in North Hills Estates was built in 1936. The landscaping complements the
architecture of the house. Marie is a self-taught gardener and redid the landscaping over 25
years with the help of her now deceased neighbor who lent her tools as well as gardening
advice and encouragement. Prior to this Marie had never gardened before but picked up “the
bug” from her gardening grandparents. The front yard is framed by a beautiful blue lace cap
hydrangea, and ever blooming viburnum interspersed with a deep rose heuchera, Japanese
painted ferns, hardy geranium Wargrave Pink, an outstanding bank of larkspur, jackmanii
clematis and variegated red twig dogwood. Bleeding heart (dicentra) provides the early spring
color, as does a poeny. A large brunerra anchors a row of colorful annuals.
The back yard is a true secret garden replete with a hammock in the woods. Planters of red
geraniums and trade long vinca soften and provide pops of color. A lacy red Japanese maple
adds delicacy in the shade.
