Greetings Garden Friends
This fall we have had an extended number of warm days
to put our gardens to bed. This was certainly a blessing
for me, as, usually by the time the oak leaves in the woods
behind my house fall, it is cold and wet and I’m DONE
with the garden. This year I was in short sleeves, raking
out my beds, just a week ago. Now I am enjoying the evergreens and ornamental grasses waving
in the wind outside the windows of my sunroom. The patio and porch pots crowd my indoor
spaces, and I look forward to the Amaryllis, Christmas Cactus, and Poinsettias for added indoor
color. As our local politicians ask us to shelter in place with the rise of COVID cases across the
state, I look forward to decorating our home, putting up the Christmas tree, hanging the garland,
lights, and bright festive decorations that mark the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
The holidays will be very different this year for many of us with smaller celebrations with immediate
family, raising toasts by ZOOM, and sheltering in place for the health and safety of family
and friends. It was with very heavy hearts that we had to cancel the December meeting/Christmas
Luncheon at Shannopin Country Club, but we needed to follow state and CDC guidelines
to keep all of us safe.
Please remember those struggling to make ends meet this Christmas by considering a donation to
North Hills Community Outreach for their Sharing Warmth project, which helps residents cover
the costs of their utility bills/keeping their homes warm and lights as winter approaches. Consider
donating the amount of money you are now NOT spending on the Christmas Luncheon/gift
exchange. You can pop a check in the mail or drop off your donation to North Hills Community
Outreach, 1975 Ferguson Road, Allison Park, PAÂ 15101.
I am hopeful that with the vaccine distribution on the horizon, we will ALL be able to safely
gather again in 2021. Stay safe and Happy Holidays to you all! Kate THE
